2026/03/12Yamato Kogyo Achieves Certification from the International Organization “Global Steel Climate Council” First Japanese Steelmaker to Lead Steel Industry Decarbonization in Alignment with International Standards
Yamato Kogyo Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture / Representative Director and President: Mikio Kobayashi; hereinafter “the Company”) is pleased to announce that it has obtained certification under “The Steel Climate Standard”, the industry standard established by the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC), an international organization dedicated to the decarbonization of the steel sector. The Company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets through 2050 and the validity of its roadmap have been recognized as conforming to the standard established by the GSCC, which is in line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C scenario goal. This marks the first for a Japanese steel manufacturer.
About the Certification
The Steel Climate Standard, for which we have obtained certification on this occasion, is an international standard that defines methodologies for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the life cycle of steel products, as well as sectoral targets for the steel industry aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal.
The Standard covers not only direct and indirect GHG emissions from steelmaking through hot rolling processes, but also emissions associated with raw material procurement and transportation. Under the Standard, the emissions intensity in the base year (ton of CO₂ emissions per ton of hot rolled steel ) and the interim- to long-term reduction targets that are science-based were verified by an independent third party, the Japan Management Association Sustainability Center, after which official certification was granted by GSCC.
The Yamato Kogyo Group promotes sustainability management across the entire group to realize a sustainable society. We will further strengthen our response to various social issues, including climate change, to achieve the sustainable growth of our group and the further enhancement of corporate value.
